Petra is considered to be the oldest city in Jordan. Till date there is no evidence about the actual date when the city of Petra had come into existence. In the new list of wonders Petra has been added as one of world’s seven wonder in the new list of wonders prepared in 2007. Don’t you think that visiting the seventh wonder of the world is the best way to spend your holiday? As it will not only add to your knowledge bank but will also be a great achievement in life. It is a carved city in the lap of the Wadi Musa Canyon. The buildings and monuments of red stone lend a graceful beauty to the city. It was built by the Nabataeans many centuries ago. They worshipped the pre Islamic gods and goddesses worshipped by the Arabs.

The architecture is unique as all the buildings are made by cutting the rocks. It has been acclaimed by UNESCO as a site of World Heritage. The best modes of conveyance to visit the sites are camels, horses or donkeys. The beauty and the color of the city has made artist and poets compare it to the red rose. The most famous building is the treasury. You have to cross the Siq to visit the treasury. Petra is situated to the South of Amman. It is two hundred kilometers from Amman.

If you visit Petra always prepare your itinerary in such a way that you can spend adjust a night stay at Petra. This will be worthwhile as you can spend the night in Wadi Rum desert which is called the desert of the moon. If you like handicrafts you can buy Bedouin handicraft materials. It is unusual as the materials are made of the red colored sand which needs no artificial color for adding beauty.

Do you want to forget the present and reside in the grandeur of the past? Then the best place to satisfy your hearts desire is Petra in Jordan. Petra is a city of architectural elegance and grandeur as it is the city which has been carved in the rocks. It is believed to be carved by the Arab traders, who settled there nearly two thousand years ago when they developed it as their trading centre. The entrance to this red city is through a gorge which is narrow and if you cannot walk you can hire a horse or a camel or a donkey to pas through the one kilometer Siq and enter the Red city.

It is best to walk while crossing the Siq as you will be able to stand and appreciate the carvings and the paintings made on the walls of the Siq. As soon as you cross the Siq you will get the surprise of your life. As soon as you come out in the open you will come face to face with a grand building called the treasury. It is a huge building carved out of the red rock in front of which all the other monuments seem to be dwarfed. There are many ancient temples which have the idols of gods and goddesses who were worshipped by the Arabs before Islam had spread in the country. There are ruins of houses and other ancient monuments all of which present the rich architecture of those days.

While planning to visit Petra do not be in hurry if you really want to enjoy your visit and carry back the memory enclosed in your camera. You should capture the real colors of the rock during dusk when the sun rays create a special hue on the rocks. This will be the best part of your journey. (www.tour-petra.com)

The ancient city of Petra (“Rock” in Greece) is a beautiful archeological city in Jordan. It is world renowned for its natural rock shape architecture. In July 2007, Petra was named one of the New Seven Wonders of the World. The city lies on the slope of Mount Hor, enclosed in a basin amid the towering rock mountains of Arabah. A beautiful stream runs down perennially throughout the mountains. Because of its natural shape and structure it used to act as a fortress in the ancient times as it controlled the commercial trading routes that connected Gaza, Bosra, Persian Gulf and Damascus. One can see magnificent rocks carved out to form monastery, and theater. One can see the shafts, the sandstones, cliffs and other extensive ruins.

The city is truly a red rose carved forever in time. The rock structures and carved monuments lend an air of mystique and elegance to the city which was declared a World Heritage Site in 1985. A traveler, who looks forward to an adventure of timelessness, will definitely fall in love with the rock city. Jordan, of all the places in the world is a rare place that blends with mystique, tradition and hospitality. Petra signifies that beauty is indeed timelessness. If one had to see elegance and beauty personified, the city of Petra would make for the perfect picture. Without a doubt, Petra is a precious jewel in the crown of Jordan’s popular places.

For a wanderer, or a photographer, Petra embodies the ultimate charm. With a number of well equipped resorts and hotels around Petra, one can easily stay here. It is also very well connected by flights and local transportation. For a Petra tourist to enjoy the old world charm, Jordan offers the right blend of hospitality and a rich culture that adds up to a beautiful experience.
